Program - Labs - Writers Lab

Binger-1
Good scripts start on the 10th rewrite.

Writers Lab Outline

In this lab, screenwriters and writers/directors with a powerful synopsis, treatment or full draft script broaden their narrative skills while developing their projects under the guidance of a wide variety of high- end script and industry experts. Original screenplays, adaptations and commissioned projects are welcome. This lab has the flexibility to respond to the individual needs and voice of writers and their projects.

There are regular visits from international script consultants who guide the projects from synopsis to treatment to first draft, or from first draft onwards. Under their expert guidance, projects are analysed by teams of participants.

Building on these workshops, a range of activities helps to broaden the scope of the projects and to increase the choices within the writers' grasp. Films are analysed for structure, content and form. Workshops are given on genre, tone, characterization, dialogue and scene-writing. Improvisations and readings provide writers with fresh insights and suggestions.

Profile applicants

Writers applying for this lab are expected to have professional experience in writing in any of the following forms; film, television, advertising, theatre, documentary, journalism, literature/publishing. And/or extensive professional experience in film and television development and/or production.

It is also important that applicants are able to demonstrate that they are applying to Binger at the appropriate stage in their career. They need to be at a point where they have a sense of having found their "voice". They should be looking for skills and techniques for developing their projects and ideas rather than at a stage of still looking for what interests or motivates them.

Projects submitted for development in the lab should demonstrate the following:
- a coherent interesting/original story with a (potentially) strong narrative
- accessibility to an audience
- relevance
