Genre: Formula or Freedom?

A Masterclass by Ken Dancyger on March 1 & 2.

Is it a romantic comedy?
Historical drama?
Action thriller?
Does this get you puzzled?

Every film is a genre film. But each genre has a different formula. Knowledge of genre gives the writer a real head start in writing his film.

In this two day masterclass Ken Dancyger offers an exciting look at different genres. He will explore the narrative forms of genres that are plot-, character- or voice driven, including case studies and examples of films showing the different shapes, structures and characteristics of each of them.

Dancyger will examine films that have both been successful and unsuccessful, using excerpts of current films as In The Valley of Elah (Paul Haggis, 2007), Knocked Up (Judd Apatow, 2007), Across the Universe (Julie Taymor, 2007), Starting Out in the Evening (Andrew Wagner, 2007) and Away from Her (Sarah Polley, 2006). Dancyger will take a look at the genre pathways that offer alternatives to the roads taken.

Knowledge of genre will be a great help in the whole process of filming. From script to marketing. Therefore Genre: Formula or Freedom? is for writers, directors, producers, script editors and advisors.
