Binger – Screen International Interview 2007: Margarethe von Trotta

German director, actress and screenwriter Margarethe von Trotta will be the Guest of Honor of the Binger – Screen International Interview on Friday September 28 at the Netherlands Film Festival in Utrecht.

US editor of Screen International Mike Goodridge will talk with Von Trotta about her impressive body of work, her passion for filmmaking and the future of European cinema.

Margarethe von Trotta (1942) starts her career in 1965 as an actress, first in theatre, soon in cinema; on the silver screen she captures people’s hearts in films by Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Volker Schlöndorff. In the seventies Von Trotta turns her hand to writing and directing. Together with Schlöndorff – by then her husband - she co-writes and –directs Der Plötzliche Reichtum der Armen Leute von Kronbach (1971) and the successful Die Verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum (1975).

Von Trotta has a love-hate relationship with Germany. Her films are about crucial moments in German history, discussing the two themes so important in her work: strong women and captivity. With her social criticism, especially regarding the position of women, she obtains a strong position in the Neue Deutsche Welle, making extraordinary films including Die Bleierne Zeit (1981), Heller Wahn (1983), Die Geduld der Rosa Luxemburg (1986), Das Versprechen (1995) and more recently Rosenstrasse (2003) and Ich bin die Andere (2006).
Von Trotta’s films gain international success; she wins numerous prizes including a Golden Lion at the international film festival of Venice (Die Bleierne Zeit, 1981), and the Bavarian Film Award for Best Director (Das Versprechen, 1995), was nominated for a Golden Palm at the film festival of Cannes twice (Die Geduld der Rosa Luxemburg in 1986 and Paura e amore in 1988) and received – again in Venice - an Honorable Mention for her film Rosenstrasse in 2003.

The interview is a collaboration of Binger Filmlab, Screen International and Holland Film Meeting (the international section of the Netherlands Film Festival) and will take place on Friday September 28, at 5 pm at Grand Hotel Karel V, Geertebolwerk 1 in Utrecht.
