Directors Lab
Profile applicants: Directors LabApplicants
applying as directors are expected to have previous drama experience in
directing drama including TV series, soaps, advertising and short films
(consideration will also be given to directors from a documentary
background but their work must show evidence of a sense of narrative
and an aesthetic sensibility that might translate into dramatic
mise-en-scène).
Applicants will be assessed on the video
material submitted as part of their application. This material should
demonstrate a strong directing ability including a sense of story and
dramatic conflict/tension, an ability to work with actors and deliver
good performances; and a good sense of how to visualise/realise drama.
Applicants should also demonstrate their desire to make films, which
are accessible to a cinema audience.
The projects should be
well-developed (ideally full-draft screenplays), coherent and of a
sufficient standard which enables the director to usefully explore the
material in workshop situations.
Applicants should be able to
demonstrate that they are at a stage in their career where they are
looking to further refine their skills and techniques rather than
looking for an opportunity to generally learn about directing. The
focus of the programme is on script analysis, working with actors,
exploring character and text while also developing collaborative skills
with key heads of department and an understanding of feature
production, management dynamics.
