Last week Amsterdam took the stage as Europe’s capital of film production as 50 talented international producers gathered for the closing week of EAVE's (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs) year long programme, the EAVE European Producers Workshop 3.
"From the Tiger Awards to CineMart, from the Berlinale’s Co-production Market to screenings in the festival’s Generation, Forum and Panorama sections, all the way up to the Academy Awards themselves, plus Binger advisors hosting every apparent event within sight... the Binger invasion, clearly, is on" reports Matthew Curlewis.
“Times are changing fast, and opportunities abound” moderator for the day, and independent producer with Smarthouse Films, Danielle Guirguis proclaimed as part of her summing up to the 20 or so participants, filled to the brim with news, reports and announcements that comprised Part 2 of the recent Binger Filmlab / MEDIA Desk Nederland initiative on the business of new media.
Cue lights, roll film and PUMP UP THE VOLUME. International star cinematographer Chris Doyle suddenly charges in and vamps across the stage punching his fist in the air, shouting along (in French) to the music. Then in the room’s side shadows he pads back and forth a moment, beer in hand, before swaggering across stage again, bathed in his own gloriously saturated images playing out on three screens.
It’s a gorgeously clear, warm Sunday, a rarity in Holland, and people with regular week-day jobs are flocking to parks and beaches in droves. In Utrecht however, the Netherlands Film Festival is in full swing, and MakersvoorMakers, a festival highlight according to some participants, is about to commence.
An authentic salon atmosphere arose in the Binger’s alley space as one of America’s most celebrated composers, Marvin Hamlisch, visited the Binger Filmlab to discuss his work, exchange anecdotes and even play some tunes during an inspiring lunch.
A recurring motif in the film Shakespeare in Love feels like it could have been written referring to the opening week of any Binger Writers Lab or Directors Lab....
