Program - Labs - Directors Lab

Directors Lab
This unique lab is specially designed to help directors acquire the new skills and tools needed to direct their full-length feature.
Directors experiment with style and approach, and investigate their personal visual voice or signature. Through shooting workshops, they develop a collaborative work process with actors and key creative partners.
Participating directors receive coaching on auditioning and casting, explore rehearsal techniques, work with professional actors on their scripts, and develop effective management and communication skills with cast, crew and production unit.
Profile applicants
Directors are expected to have previous drama experience. This may include directing drama, TV series, advertising and short films (consideration will also be given to directors from a documentary background, but their work must show evidence of a sense of narrative and an aesthetic sensibility that might translate into dramatic mise-en-scène).
Applicants will be assessed on the video material submitted as part of their application. This material should demonstrate a strong directing ability including a sense of story and dramatic conflict/tension, an ability to work with actors and deliver good performances; and a good sense of how to visualise/realise drama. Applicants should also demonstrate their desire to make films which are accessible to a cinema audience.
The projects should be well-developed (ideally full-draft screenplays), coherent and of a standard which enables the director to usefully explore the material in workshop situations.
